Indian Community School Kuwait (ICSK), or Indian School, Kuwait (ISK), is the oldest Indian school recognized by the Ministry of Education, Kuwait and is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi.〔http://www.icsk-kw.com〕 There are also other Indian Community Schools, including Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which closed its doors in the early 2000s. ISK started on 5 May 1959 at Nugra with just twenty two students. It then shifted to Hawally in 1960 and later on to Istiqlal Street. In May 1969, ten years later, ISK opened its first branch in Mangaf-Fahaheel with five teachers and about seventy students in classes KG to STD III. ISK by then had a total of 39 classrooms and around one hundred teachers operating two shifts. In 1970 the ISK relocated to a new building in Salmiya. In March 1972 the first batch of students appeared for the All India Higher Secondary Examination. In 1974 school occupied the second building in Salmiya. In 1975 the school adopted the Indian national pattern of education i.e. 10 + 2 + 3. In 1976, the school started the afternoon shift. In 1977, the last batch of students answered the All India Higher Secondary Examination and in the same year the first batch of 10 + 2 appeared for the AISS Exam. The school is recognized by the Ministry of Education, State of Kuwait and is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, India, for All India Secondary School Examination (Std. X) and All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Std. XII) The school changed its name to The Indian Community School Kuwait (ICSK) in June 2001 and is now managed by a Board of Trustees, whose members are Indians. The school has an alumni association known as The "Association of Indian School Ex-Students" (AISES). It has four branches in Kuwait: Senior Branch Salmiya, Khaitan Branch, Junior Salmiya and Amman Branch. It has nearly 4500 students enrolled. It is challenged by schools such as Indian English Academy School (Don Bosco), DPS (FAIPS), and a few others. The best branch is the Khaitan, which has two football pitches, and volleyball and basketball courts. Apart from these there is a big auditorium in which badminton is played.
